funny thing about spelling ...

Here's a little something I got in the e-mail awhile back ... thought I would share with other folks who like/love words.

Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at an Elingsh uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer is at the rghit pclae.

The rset can be a total mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm.

Tihs is bcuseae we do not raed ervey lteter by it slef but the wrod as a wlohe.

Naet, huh? It's wierd how our midns wrok.

Random Guam Fact Of The Day:
• Chamorro was a completely oral language originally. It's only been in the relatively recent past that there was an effort to make the language a written one. However, there still is a lot of argument/disagreement over orthography and spelling ... as, I guess, is natural when you try to make an oral language into a written one.

Excellent! Very effective example.

As you obviously have a interest in language, see this link on the BBC news website about the lost letter - Yogh

Why is Menzies pronounced Mingis?

I've gotten this so many times in emails...I love reading it. I'd like to see a book come out in this way. It's unbelievable how our mind interprets without our even trying. Now, if I sat down and tried to think it out, chances are I'd lose my mind. But just reading it quickly, no problem.

alex: thanks, mate; I thought it was neat LOL ... and thanks for the link!

kathi: isn't it strange how our brains work? It was much easier to read the first time, when I wasn't thinking about it; second time it was making me nuts. LOL

I had to think about naet. I was thinking Nate! I'm so blonde.

I think I read something about not needing vowels to be able to read something but that sounds trickier. Hmmm...

Dezr, I thought you had gone all dyslexic on me for a moment. LOL.

Great stuff.

Dzer, I did the name thing on purpose. Don't chastise me. On second thoughts, do. LOL.

jenn: I see the Nate thing ... and are you saying you had a vowel movement? LOL

gigi: poor baby *smooch*

suze: you cheeky bird!

Is that chastisement enough, or do you need a spanking or something else? ;)
