a very Hughes influence ...

For most folks of my generation (I was born in 1969), many of the movies that marked our teen years were made by one man -- John Hughes. He was the king of teen romantic-comedies, and comedies in general. Hughes was the mastermind behind the so-called “Brat Pack.”

His name not ringing any bells? Howzabout some of his movies:

“Mr. Mom” — Michael Keaton was much funnier as the goofball guy than Batman.

• The “Vacation” series — Still some of the funniest movies EVER. Chevy Chase was brilliant … yes, THAT Chevy Chase … and Beverly D’Angelo was D’Bomb. Heh.

“Sixteen Candles” — She gave her panties to a geek!

“Weird Science” — Memorable mostly for an insanely hot Kelly LeBrock. There’s no way I could count the number of times she filled my fantasies. Oh, and a young Bill Paxton as Chet.

From my heart and from my hand
Why don't people understand
My intentions ... Oooh, weird ...
Weird science!!

“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” — Gotta be one of my all-time faves. The parade scene was brilliant.

“Planes, Trains & Automobiles” – Steve Martin and John Candy. Need I say more?

“Uncle Buck” — Another one of my all-time favorite flicks. Picturing John Candy making giant pancakes still cracks me up.

• The remake of “Miracle on 34th Street” — the original is one of my favorite movies ever (I have a lot of those, don’t I? LOL), but the remake did a good job with it. Plus I love Elizabeth Perkins (totally under-rated dream babe!).

“Home Alone” — Hard to top the physical comedy of Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern trying to get “that kid.”

and, of course …

“The Breakfast Club” — the protoypical high-school stereotypes all forced to spend a Saturday detention together in the library. There was the jock, the geek, the badboy, the popular chick and the weird chick. Together, they all learn they aren't so very different from each other ... aww. LOL

This post was mostly inspired by the death of a key character in the movie — Paul Gleason, who played hard-ass Principal Richard Vernor. He died of a rare form of asbestos-related cancer at the age of 67.

“Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.”

Farewell, Principal Vernor. You will be missed.

Hehehehe...even though I grew up in an entirely different country and in the southern part of the continent, I too grew up with these movies.

And I agree that there is something about Elizabeth Perkins. She is very underrated.

natalia: she is cute and very girl-next-doorish, but also has a subtle sensual quality about her ... she's so fun and cute in "Big" and "He Said, She Said." *sigh* ... she's just dreamy

Richard Vernon: You think about this: when you get old, these kids - when *I* get old - they're going to be running the country.
Carl: Yeah.
Richard Vernon: Now this is the thought that wakes me up in the middle of the night. That when I get older, these kids are going to take care of me.
Carl: I wouldn't count on it.

Sad to say, but it's one of my fav movies of all time; R.I.P. Mr. Vernon...
Speaking of Elizabeth Perkins, is anyone else watching "Weeds"? The cast includes Mary-Louise Parker in addition to the wonderful and underrated Ms. Perkins (and Kevin Nealon, who is hilarious as the pothead accountant who "advises" MLP's character on business matters) and it's quite good. I can't wait for it to start back up...

i think i waited until i was too old to see "ferris bueller," because i do not understand its appeal. i mean, it's cute, but it's not THE BEST MOVIE EVER MADE, as so many as my peers had suggested.

however, i do regularly use the "bueller? bueller?" line at work...

m_o_o_nspells: it's a great flick ... and I don't have any premium cable channels, so I've been missing out on Weeds ... guess I will have to wait for the DVD of season one ... and welcome to the Diatribe :)

suze: I just bet he is ... did he wear his clothes into the first shower you two shared? LOL

terry: I certainly don't think it's the best movie ever, but it's one of my faves ... and ben stein rocks! :)

I knew John Hughes did some of the movies you listed, but I didn't realize he'd done others. "The Breakfast Club" and "Sixteen Candles" are two of my favorites. About 12 years ago a group of teachers ate lunch together. We took several days and watched "Sixteen Candles" during lunch and laughed and laughed. Great post, DZER... thanks for the memories! xox

Ok, here goes... My 8th grade science teacher at BBJHS (Sinajana) was Mrs. Riley. Her son, supposedly, was in Oingo Boingo. Don't know why I wanted to share that but, oh well...

snow white: oh yeah; he's done a bunch more too! you're welcome :)

chrissie: you know jake didn't make that cake for her! he's rich! he's a teenage boy! he doesn't bake! He bought it or had the help bake it :P

also ... does your table have a glass top? that could be dangerous! heh

oh so: No way!! Guam connections to Oingo Boingo? too much! LOL

Another interesting and underrated John Hughes flick is "She's Having a Baby" with Keven Bacon, Elizabeth McGovern (another girl next door hottie) and a very young Alec Baldwin.

I did not see that he had died. I am sad now. I just bought Breakfast Club and 16 Candles (my favorite Hughes movie) a couple months ago.

I love the scene in Weird Science when Chet (Bill Paxton is a large... ummm, was he a pile of crap? And you keep hearing fart noises from him. Classic!
